Friday favorites

It’s been a fun and crazy week this week with Halloween; so my favorites this week are all pictures from our holiday adventures! I’m looking forward to blogging about one of my favorite birthday parties I’ve ever done next week, so make sure to check back in! Have a wonderful weekend, and don’t forget to move your clocks back! Somehow I don’t think my littles will get the memo 😄

Hard to believe next week is Halloween!  If you haven’t gotten your Halloween candy yet, I would make your way to the stores this weekend;  I went yesterday and there was less to choose from than I thought!  I can just imagine how sparse the choices will be next week.  Luckily they weren’t out of pretzels……my favorite thing to get for my kids “trunk or treat” at school.  Yes, I’m that mom that gets pretzels for the kids instead of candy.  Before you judge, I did get candy to pass out to the neighborhood kids, I just thought I would “healthify” it up a little for Jake, Tyler and their buddies.  And its less bad-stuff for me to have around the house to eat prior to Halloween day!

My two favorite things this week are both Halloween related as we are finishing up final touches for the holiday this weekend.  We will be carving one or two of our pumpkins (and baking the pumpkin seeds of course!), but I’m excited to have Jake decorate his pumpkins using some of these ideas (specifically the sticker decorating) : http://dailymom.com/nurture/7-kid-friendly-pumpkin-decorating-ideas/

This weekend we are also going to be making these pumpkin rice krispie treats for Jake’s teachers: http://www.thecomfortofcooking.com/2013/09/pumpkin-spice-rice-krispie-treats.html   I always like to bring the teachers a little something for the holidays, but especially when a holiday falls during the week, I like to make things that are easy to package and transport.  Rice krispie treats definitely fit the bill………and who wouldn’t love some pumpkin added into the mix!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend filled with pumpkins, friends and family.  It’s definitely going to be hot cocoa weather here; fall has arrived in NC!

Happy Friday everyone!!!!! I hope everyone has had a nice week; its hard to believe we are only two weeks away from Halloween.  This weekend we are in full fall mode: pumpkin picking, hay rides, applesauce-making and house decorating.  I think its time to break out the fall clothes and put away summer!

This past week I discovered an amazing new location for parties around the area, Giggles:  http://gigglesdaycareinc.com/index.html .  It’s a drop-in childcare center, but they also host private parties on Sundays.  The prices are on their website and they have an amazing facility for kids and their families, not to mention the wonderful and accommodating owners.  I already can’t wait to use them for our next birthday party.

Tomorrow morning I’m taking my boys to the NC State Farmers Market to pick up apples for our homemade applesauce.  It’s a long-standing family tradition every fall to make several batches of applesauce for the holidays and to freeze for the winter months.  There are a couple different ways to make it, but one of the simplest ways is to throw it all in the crockpot.  I like to use a mixture of apples from the market, and if they are good apples all you’ll need to add is some cinnamon and brown sugar.  And feel free to use any leftover apples for apple crisp or pie!  Here’s a recipe to get you started: http://www.skinnytaste.com/2011/10/crock-pot-applesauce.html

Enjoy your weekend, time with the family, and fall/holiday prep.  Don’t lose sight of what this time of year is about……making memories with those around you.  And speaking of memories, if you’re headed out to the State Fair be careful and go early to beat the traffic!

Holiday Shopping – Local Edition

Holiday Shopping – Local Edition

In my opinion, you can never start shopping for the holidays too early; spread it out over a couple months and it makes it not so daunting! When you do your shopping this year, make sure to shop with local vendors and especially mom-owned businesses.  Vend Raleigh has a directory that lists local vendors by category: http://directory.vendraleigh.com/

Have fun looking around and hopefully doing some shopping!

Friday Favorites — Halloween Prep

Happy Friday everyone! Hopefully everyone made it through their week and got to see more sunshine than we did down here in NC….fingers crossed we get to see the sun this weekend!  With Halloween only three weeks away you can’t go anywhere without seeing candy corn, costumes and pumpkins.  We have the pumpkins and costumes covered, but will wait to get the candy until the week of Halloween to avoid having the temptation in the house….if we bought it now I’m afraid I would eat it all before the little kids even got here!

My favorite things this week all pertain to Halloween and are relatively simple to make/decorate/do.  I normally try to bring in a little something to school for the kids and teachers, and if I have leftovers my co-workers luck out as well!  I will be making this candy corn bark this year because it is super simple to make and transports well: http://www.brit.co/dipped-treats/

White Chocolate + Candy Bark

If you’re going to host a Halloween party this year, this is a great party activity for kids and adults: http://www.positivelysplendid.com/2012/10/pumpkin-bean-bag-toss-game-with-jo-ann.html  If you’re not up for sewing, just use some paint and draw numbers on the actual pumpkins instead.  You can buy beanbags at Target or any toy store.

This time of year brings alot of opportunities to host people whether it be family, friends, neighbors or co-workers; as with anything your best bet is to focus on good food and drinks and keep decorations simple.  When you can, use natural items to decorate such as acorns, pumpkins and leaves.  This site has five great table decoration ideas to use at your next get together: http://www.temp-tations.com/5-fall-decorating-entertaining-ideas

And when in doubt, go with my motto……..KEEP IT SIMPLE!  The best part of this time of year is the time we get to spend with our family and friends.  Everyone enjoy your weekend and the nice fall weather!
